Support from Citizens Crucial to Move Forward Significant Breakthroughs in GPH-MILF Peace Talks

The Peace Panels of the Government of the Philippines (GPH) and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) made significant steps yesterday by agreeing on important principles that guide the negotiations.

The Mindanao Peaceweavers (MPW), its component networks and allied partners, considers the 10 principles contained in the GPH-MILF April 2012 Decision Points as substantial breakthroughs. These should pave the way for both parties to craft a peace agreement anchored on the legitimate claims and aspirations of the Bangsamoro people as well as on the integrity of the Philippine state. We laud this significant milestone.

MPW urges every citizen to do their best to understand and to support the decision points reached after much difficult negotiation. We call on the Filipino nation to echo in every home and workplace the spirit of compromise shown by the GPH and MILF.

We further enjoin the GPH and the MILF to stand firm against cynics and spoilers of this breakthrough among and outside their ranks and to reach out to our people so they may be mobilized to support this step that brings us closer to peace.

The MPW will be pursuing consultations with various stakeholders to discuss their perspectives and proposals on the GPH-MILF peace negotiations.   We are confident that as the people assert their peace agenda, they will help move this GPH-MILF breakthrough forward until the long-awaited peace agreement’s signing and implementation.
